The Ontario ARC&E Spatial Database was developed to facilitate PRRS & PED ARC&E projects in Ontario. The standardization and integration of disease data (PRRS & PED) with a geographical information system (GIS) provides for visualization, temporal and spatial analysis of the data.
PRRS is the most important endemic swine disease in Canada. It is estimated that PRRS costs the Canadian pork industry 130 million dollars per year. Area Regional Control and Elimination (ARC&E) projects are essential to restore profitability to the swine industry.
